Damaged Goods No More

Child abuse around the world is a growing problem, and still it is not taken seriously enough. So many people fail to understand the deep and long lasting negative effects that child abuse has on a person.

The damage to a child's trust, their spirit, their feelings of self worth and feelings of value are ripped away; and the damage, many times, is irreparable.

For many their adult life is a struggle. Studies now show that Child abuse can actually alter a child DNA, which then means it takes even more effort to recapture a "normal" life.

It's not uncommon to hear an abuse survivor describe themselves as damaged goods, and they live so much of their life like something broken and discounted on the back shelf of life. 80% of young adults who had been abused will experience at least 1 psychiatric disorder by the age of 21 (including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, & post-traumatic stress disorder).

On the other hand, there are no statistics on how many of the abuse victims have found a way to heal their emotional wounds and turn their lives around to something more meaningful - and happy again. And in some cases they use their history as their motivation to succeed rather than be another sad statistic.

We have heard that Oprah is a survivor of sexual abuse as a child, and we read about her now living a happy life and we can see her professional success, but we know very little about the detailed steps of her healing journey. However she does inspire hope that a persons spirit can be mended; and creating personal and professional success is a possibility.

People are searching for answers. For many it is not enough to read that someone else has been there and miraculously they are now ok. What they are desperately seeking are the steps that someone else took from victim to victor, so they can take those same steps. There are a variety of journeys that are taken to get to healing.

The intention of this book is to share personal stories and professional resources that are more than just inspiration (inspiration, n; Stimulation of the mind or emotions) Inspirational stories sometimes choke us up, and we feel happy for the person in the story, but can we relate? Can we get step by step answers from these distant stories?!

The stories that will be in this book will have more answers than: just “think positive” or "just have faith". Positive thinking by itself may help some people feel better, however, we are looking for actions a person can take whether they are feeling positive or hopeful  -  or not.

Now is the time you can share your inspiration by telling your own journey through healing to victory in your life. This is an opportunity for professionals (therapist, counselors, coaches, etc) to give self-help techniques that can help a person get started, or keep moving, or how to find the right kind of help.

Personal stories that give step by step real-life solutions to how you healed your emotional wounds; empowered yourself'; regained your self esteem; regained trust; forgiveness (or not) and how you are living a normal and successful (your definition of normal and successful) in your life today - will be published here, in e-zines and blogs. This book will be marketed and shared with establishments and groups that work with abuse survivors (teachers, safe houses, counselors, medical professionals, friends).
